Biography: Dr. Robert Sigal, M.D., Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Robert Sigal sees cosmetic surgery as a way of making major contributions to people's lives. While he initially chose cosmetic surgery because it calls for multi-dimensional surgical skills and offers unique surgical challenges, he has found that the real joy of his practice comes after the surgery.
Dr. Robert Sigal - states, "It's not how the eyes look, but the new sparkle that's inside them that is the real accomplishment."

Prior to becoming a partner in the Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery serving Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC, Dr. Robert Sigal received his undergraduate degree at Harvard College and his M.D. at Jefferson Medical College. He went on to complete a full residency in General Surgery at Harbor/UCLA, culminating in a chief residency. During that time, he spent two years working in cancer research at the University of Pennsylvania, where he later trained in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Robert Sigal is Board Certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery and his articles and comments have been published extensively in medical journals and by the media.

It is Dr. Sigal's broad surgical knowledge that makes possible his goal, which is to give each cosmetic surgery patient an experience that is beyond their expectations resulting from their and how easy it was to experience.

In addition to his successful practice, Dr. Sigal is committed to helping others in need. An avid cyclist, Dr. Sigal raises money for various charities, including cancer and AIDS research, by participating in bicycle marathon fundraisers. A long time supporter of the Hunger Project, an organization dedicated to ending world hunger, Dr. Sigal remains committed to helping those most in need.

Biography: Dr. George Weston, M.D., Plastic Surgeon

Dr. George Weston was drawn to medicine by a desire to make a contribution to others, particularly cosmetic surgery, which improves the way people look and feel about themselves.

Dr. Weston is innovative, versatile, highly visual, and committed to helping his patients reach their appearance goals. Dr. Weston says, "Cosmetic surgery is the happy specialty because it frees people of their concerns about their outward appearance leaving them time to live life to the fullest."

In addition to his busy practice, Dr. Weston has been called upon to instruct other plastic surgeons at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, an exclusive society of the top Board Certified plastic surgeons in the world.

In 1998 Dr. George Westron was invited to perform a live surgical demonstration at an international forum in Barcelona, Spain. His innovative procedures have been included in numerous cosmetic surgery medical journals. Dr. Weston earned his medical degree at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He trained in General and Plastic Surgery at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. and completed fellowships in cosmetic surgery at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and the Charlotte Plastic Surgery Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Dr. George Weston's surgical practice serves Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC metroplitan area and focuses exclusively on cosmetic surgery of the body and face. What Type of Liposuction is Best for Me?

In the beginning, there was liposuction.

You take a thin hollow tube with holes on the end, put some suction on the other end, move it back and forth in the plane between the skin and the muscle and voila, fat comes out. Basic liposuction remains a great technique.

Basic liposuction delivers on its promise to remove fat safely
and effectively.

There are two issues with basic liposuction. First, it can be exhausting for the surgeon. So liposuction begat power liposuction, where the tip moves back and forth by pushing a button. This takes a lot of the fatigue out of the procedure and allows the surgeon to focus more on the result.

The second issue with liposuction is a little trickier and has to do with skin “quality.” Liposuction may damage the tissue called fascia that holds the fat in place between the skin and muscle. Now some skin is so tight, with so much extra fascia, that any amount of fat can be removed without loosening it. Some skin is so loose that it has to be tightened by removing some of it with or without liposuction. But then there’s the whole gray group in the middle where the skin is a little loose and liposuction is going to make it looser.

That’s where laser and Vaser liposuction comes in.

Both laser and vaser liposuction intend to “melt” the fat and not damage the fascia in the process. To do this, lasers use light and Vaser’s use sound. (The confusion is that the brand name “Vaser” sounds so much like the word “laser” that you’d think it was one, but it’s not – it’s ultrasound.)

Well, the bottom line is that we’ve tried both, Vaser and Laser and we like the Vaser a whole lot better. In our hands, we get smoother results more quickly with the Vaser than with the lasers that we’ve tried. The Vaser has expanded the role for liposuction in our practice and allowed us to use liposuction for patients where, in the past, we would have had to remove skin.

Sunblock 101 - Summer Tips

Most people have a misconception of how to apply or how many times one should apply sunblock. Here are some guidelines one should know before stepping out into the sun:

Liberally apply sunblock 15 minutes before you step out into the sun Make sure that you apply sunblock to skin creases, face, neck, ears and chest Re-apply every couple hours and more if you sweat or swim You should use a sunblock of at least SPF30, or SPF60 if you plan to spend a lot of time in the sun Sunburn you see today - won't show the damage until about 10 years later and the damage compounds over the years Use a suncreen that is specifically ment for the lips Make an appointment today to combate the signs of aging caused from the damaging rays of the sun

Dr. Sigal & Austin-Weston Center Staff Join University of Miami’s Medishare Haiti Earthquake Relief Project

The devastation in Haiti continues to draw much needed support from across the globe. Several members of The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery recently volunteered with the University of Miami’s Medishare Haiti Project. Dr. Robert Sigal lead the surgical team. They spent a week in Port-au-Prince contributing much needed medical relief to earthquake victims. The Austin-Weston Center surgical team left on March 22.

Staff Member Awarded by Military

Lt. Col. Jan Setnor was recently awarded “Nurse Corp IMA of the Year” by the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. This award provides Air Force-wide recognition to reservists whose service is outstanding and who contribute significantly to the Air Force medical programs.

Jan, a Nurse Anesthetist at the Austin-Weston Center, recently returned from a deployment in Afghanistan and cared for a little girl named Nazia who had swallowed a watch battery. Nazia required several surgeries and was eventually flown to the US for her medical care. Jan was one of her primary caretakers and escorted the child and her family to the US and back to Afghanistan.

The Austin-Weston Center for Plastic Surgery is very proud of Jan and the outstanding work she does.
