Can You Be Too Skinny For A BBL? Reston

With the growing trend of a full, curvy rear end, countless men and women are turning to cosmetic surgery for help achieving this look that is difficult to attain with diet and exercise alone. While butt augmentation with gluteal implants can certainly produce dramatic results, many patients prefer the more natural approach associated with Brazilian butt lift surgery. By using a patient's own fat from elsewhere in the body to enhance the size and shape of the butt, BBL surgery offers stunning results with less risk of infection or adverse reaction, as well as less visible scarring, compared with butt implants. However, to qualify for a Brazilian butt lift, patients must have enough available fat to harvest and transfer, leaving some men and women to wonder if they are too thin for BBL surgery.

The expert team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery, is highly knowledgeable and experienced in the complexities of Northern Virginia Brazilian butt lift surgery and can help patients better understand whether they have an adequate amount of fat to make their ideal BBL results possible. Discover more about the benefits of BBL in Reston, VA here, and learn if you may be a candidate for the procedure.

What is a BBL?

Commonly referred to as a BBL, the Brazilian butt lift is an innovative procedure that involves fat transfer to the buttocks in order to create a rounder, shapelier backside for men and women who find it difficult to plump up their rear end with diet and exercise alone. Some common factors that prevent patients from achieving their ideal butt shape on their own include genetics, lifestyle, weight fluctuation, aging, and others. By harvesting fat from another area of the patient's body via liposuction and transferring it to the buttocks via syringe injection, the skilled plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston can dramatically enhance a deflated butt without the need for artificial implants.

It is important to note that a Brazilian butt lift is not technically a lift procedure and does not involve the excision of loose skin. For patients whose primary concerns are loose, wrinkled, sagging skin on the butt, a traditional butt lift may be more appropriate.

How much fat is needed for a BBL?

The amount of fat used during BBL in Northern Virginia depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • Surgeon's technique and preference
  • Patient's desired outcome
  • Patient's anatomy and proportions
  • Amount of fat available
  • Expected rate of fat survival

For patients who desire only a subtle change in the size and shape of their butt, a smaller amount of fat may be adequate. However, a much larger volume of fat is required to achieve more dramatic results. On average, BBL patients often need about 1000cc (1.0L) of harvested fat for a successful and satisfactory result. Patients should keep in mind that a small percentage of fat will die after BBL, but this is taken into account by the surgeon when calculating how much fat to harvest and transfer initially.

During your initial consultation at Austin-Weston, one of our award-winning plastic surgeons will thoroughly evaluate your concerns, assess your available amount of excess fat, answer all of your questions, and help determine how much fat your Brazilian butt lift may require.

What is the ideal weight for BBL surgery?

Rather than determining if a patient qualifies for BBL surgery based on his or her weight, surgeons typically look instead at the person's BMI, or body mass index, and body fat percentage. This helps clarify how much excess fat is available to harvest based on the patient's overall anatomy and body composition.

Am I too thin for a Brazilian butt lift?

In the majority of cases, patients have enough available fat on their bodies for BBL surgery. Typically, the fat is harvested from the flanks, abdomen, or thighs. However, some exceptionally thin patients with an extremely low body fat percentage may not have an adequate amount of excess fat available for BBL. In these situations, butt augmentation using silicone implants may be a more suitable option.

Oftentimes, patients wonder if gaining weight for BBL surgery is a good idea. While gaining weight before a Brazilian butt lift may seem like a solution for making a larger amount of fat available to harvest and transfer, it is strongly discouraged. Because the newly transferred fat cells can shrink with subsequent weight loss, patients must be committed to maintaining their weight after BBL in order to preserve their results. If a patient gains weight prior to BBL and subsequently loses weight following the procedure, he or she will likely compromise or even reverse their results.
