Our team of plastic surgeons at Austin-Weston, The Center for Cosmetic Surgery performs dozens of lower body lift surgeries every year. This procedure addresses the loose skin and excess fat on the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks using an incision that encircles the body like a belt. Lower body lift surgery utilizes advanced techniques that can significantly improve the fall or collapse of areas in the midsection of both men and women. It is especially ideal for those who have lost a large amount of weight. The result is a tighter and more evenly toned lower body contour that often provides patients with a newfound confidence. A custom-tailored lower body lift designed and performed by our talented team of Reston plastic surgeons can dramatically re-imagine and remake your look with benefits that include:
Men and women with a significant amount of loose skin on their abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and hips are ideal candidates for this surgery. It is important that the weight loss has been stabilized and that a proper physical is completed to ensure the patient is ready to undergo this procedure.
Patients who would benefit from the lower body lift are:
At our practice in Reston lower body lifts are performed with an incision that goes around the midsection like a belt. In the abdominal area, this allows removal of excess and hanging skin of the abdomen and lifting of the pubic region.
Posteriorly, the buttocks is lifted, and the excess skin on the sides of the body is removed to lift the outer thigh. Some patients may require liposuction in various areas if there are additional pockets of isolated fat to address. With a lower body lift Reston patients typically have this procedure performed on an outpatient basis, but our plastic surgeons may recommend you stay the night in our overnight suite. Similar to a tummy tuck recovery, the majority of swelling begins to subside within a few weeks and final results are expected around 3 months.”
Most patients take 1-2 weeks off work for a body lift. For patients with substantial weight loss and extra skin in the vertical and horizontal dimensions, your surgeon may recommend a Fleur-de-lis body lift, which is a surgical incision of a typical body lift as well as a vertical midline incision in the abdomen. While there is extra scar associated with this operation, it is sometimes required to achieve the tightest result. Your surgeon will discuss this possibility with you at your consultation.
The incision after a lower body lift is similar to a tummy tuck in front, and it is extended around the back but low enough to cover with underwear. Patients are lighter, can wear tighter-fitting clothes, and they do not have to worry about hiding their loose skin. This surgery typically creates a tighter appearance, a more toned look, and a more youthful contour.
If you are at a point in your life where the extra skin on your lower body is interfering with your self-confidence or decreasing your range of motion or mobility, you should contact our Reston plastic surgery office for a consultation. Patients considering investing in these procedures need to be at their goal weight with good health. Also, women of childbearing age need to understand that pregnancy will alter their lower body lift results and the ideal patient is done with family planning.
Because every patient has a unique set of concerns and goals, each lower body lift is customized to meet the patient's individual needs. In general, lower body lift surgery can address loose skin and stubborn fatty tissue on the outer thighs. For patients who also wish to correct sagging skin and excess fat on the inner thighs, a combination thigh lift and/or liposuction may be recommended in addition to the classic lower body lift.
In most cases, postsurgical drains are required after a lower body lift. These devices help to drain fluid and prevent fluid build-up, which can lead to complications, delayed healing, and even the need for a second or subsequent procedure. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may have drains in place for about 1-2 weeks.
A lower body lift does result in a visible scar, but many patients are able to completely conceal their scar beneath clothing and even under some types of swimwear. Our surgeons take great care to place their lower body lift incisions in areas where they can be hidden as much as possible without sacrificing the opportunity to achieve optimal results.
