If you have inherited a small or retrusive chin and would like a more defined facial profile, chin augmentation may be a good option. As we age and fat deposits begin to accumulate in and around the chin and neck area, we can lose that photogenic profile we once enjoyed.
A weak or under defined chin can accentuate the nose and make it appear larger than its actual size. For patients in Reston chin augmentation can contour the chin to a more desirable shape. This procedure is often combined with other facial contouring operations such as liposuction of the neck, a rhinoplasty or a face lift. It may also be performed as a stand-alone operation. The best candidates for chin augmentation surgery:
During a chin augmentation Reston patients will be under general anesthesia, which is performed as an outpatient procedure at our accredited surgical facility. Your plastic surgeon will make a small incision under the chin to insert the implant. For some patients, the incision is placed inside the mouth instead of under the chin.
Most chin implants are made of some form of silicone and have a rubbery feel that is very similar to the natural chin area. The implants come in a variety of sizes, and your surgeon will help you choose the right one for you. Via the same incision under the chin (submental), removal of neck fat can also be accomplished if necessary. The surgery generally takes around one hour.
Right after chin augmentation surgery, a dressing will be applied to the chin where it should remain for 3 – 4 days. Patients can expect some pain, tenderness, and swelling.
Some patients may experience a tight, stretched sensation following surgery. These symptoms usually go away in about one week. It is also typical to have some numbness after chin augmentation that can take several weeks or occasionally months to resolve. After the swelling subsides, patients will be able to see the early results of their surgery. Most patients take off work one week for the operation.
A short or weak chin not only makes your profile look weak, it can also make your nose appear to be large and disproportionate. While some patients think they need a nose surgery (rhinoplasty), they may only need chin augmentation surgery to achieve full facial harmony and symmetry. It is also common to combine both procedures. If you want to find out if this surgery is right for you, contact our office today to schedule a consultation.
